For the best autumn backdrops, visit Prague's historic center which is home to the Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral, and the medieval Charles Bridge adorned with towering stone statues – all of which are listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Deepen the macabre vibes by visiting the Sedlec Ossuary "Bone Church" at the nearby city of Kunta Hora!

No place flaunts eerie autumn tones as well as Scotland, with its sprawling auburn scenery, a perfect collection of clouds hovering overhead, and endless castles and ruins to explore. In particular, the charm of the Scottish Highlands will give you the fall-time vibe that you dream of. Rent a car for the pleasure of journeying the haunting countryside at your own pace and hop on the Jacobite Steam Train for thrilling views of foggy lochs and glowing landscapes.

- Akureyi, Iceland -

Not only does Iceland serve gorgeous panoramas in the fall, but October is one of the quietest months to visit, creating that distinct serene feeling that autumntime is known for. In Akureyi, the months of October/November boast local seasonal treats such as whale-watching, dipping in hot springs, and excursions to explore views of the aurora borealis where the dancing colors resemble an enchanted witch’s brew, creating a perfect fall-time exhibition.

- Derry, Northern Ireland -

Ireland is the birthplace of Halloween – starting out as the Gaelic harvesttime festival of Samhain, originally celebrated by ancient Celts over 1,000 years ago. Fittingly, Northern Ireland is home to the largest Halloween Festival of Europe: Derry Halloween! From its variety of fall foliage to its stark architecture and walled city center, Derry provides the ideal atmosphere necessary for transforming into a haunted spectacle of costumes, parades, creepy walking tours, dinner parties, shows, dances, kids’ activities, movie screenings, haunted houses, contests, and a firework show– a magnificent way to celebrate the season!

- Paris, France -

While Paris is known as the capital of romance, it’s also the perfect destination for the spooky season. While beautiful, the city is full of haunting history. Explore eerie catacombs, wander through stunning cemeteries, marvel at gothic architecture, and enjoy the ambience as the hustle-and-bustle quiets down and the tree-lined streets start to change color. The peaceful spectacle of Paris in autumn will check off boxes for any fall-time enthusiast.

- Piedmont, Italy -

Italy may be most popular in summer months, but autumn is arguably the most visually stunning time to visit, especially when witnessing the hillsides as they start to blush. The Langhe wine region of Piedmont is home to far-reaching vineyards that ring in the fall like no other, boasting opportunities to sip vino while overlooking am ombré of harvesttime colors. This time of year is also harvesting season for white truffles, a must-try local delicacy.

- Kyoto, Japan -

Autumn in Japan just hits different, with its temples nestled between reddening trees, gently glowing sunsets, and an array of vibrant harvest festivals. Kyoto is a great spot because of its natural beauty and plethora of shrines which flaunt an unbeatable autumn ambience and host a variety of exciting ceremonies throughout the season. Avanti will start offering customized vacations to Japan again this December! Make sure to book early for autumn 2023, as the color-changing season draws a lot of visitors.

- Galapagos Islands -

A tropical getaway might not be the first thing that comes to mind when we discuss the seasonality of autumn, but nevertheless, the Galapagos Islands are truly awesome during this time of year. Though you might not think it, the islands’ vegetation goes through annual cycles, changing into the familiar orange/red hues of the autumn season. Additionally, visiting in October/November will allow you to beat the blazing heat of summer while still providing perfect conditions for snorkeling, boating, and whale watching.
