To our partnered Travel Advisors, Alison Atkinson might not be a name you recognize right off the bat – but she’s very much known by our global DMC partners! As Avanti’s Commercial Director, she is one of the key components of our Barcelona office, which we launched over 6 years ago. Now comprising of 16 employees who work in Operations, Air, Product, and other key departments, our Barcelona base serves as our in-travel contact line for your clients who may need assistance while on their European ventures, covering a broader time zone than just our U.S. office alone. Alison’s role in all of this is to ensure the office operates seamlessly, heading the recruitment and mentorship of our amazing team, while overseeing the global picture of Barcelona’s functions and Avanti as a whole. A lover of travel – especially when globetrotting for outdoor sports and adventure! – Alison brings her passion for the industry and for the people who are part of it, into the workplace. What Excites You About Working with Avanti: "Avanti is amazing because of how quick we are to notice trends and develop new products. We are well known across Europe – especially Italy – for the personal experiences we offer. In fact, many suppliers design tours specifically for Avanti, making them exclusive and wholly unique for Advisors who book with us. We also have the ability to choose our products meaningfully in a way that positively benefits economies. We care about where our money goes and how we give back to the people, ensuring that we are buying locally. Our products really showcase the culture of the destinations through these deeply personal experiences."

What is Something that People Might Not Know About Avanti: "While we are highly renowned for our European products, people might not realize how extensive our offerings are for other continents as well. We have stellar options in Asia, Latin America, North Africa, the Middle East – and we just recently launched the South Pacific (Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji). We are experts in all of these locations and have some of the best products and support staff, and we want our Advisors to think of us when crafting non-European itineraries for their clients. This year, we will be launching even more Latin American products, as well as expanding all of our non-European options moving into 2025. Take advantage of our wide variety and knowledge staff!"

Tell Us About the Barcelona Office and its Significance to Avanti: "I was originally brought on board to work more closely with our European DMCs, and as we realized the impact that this had on our partnerships, we knew that this would increase our communication and bring additional support to our clients. We grew our staff to include teams in Operations, Air, and Product. We are now 16 people – with 11 various nationalities amongst us! – and we serve as an in-travel contact line for customers who need support during their trips. Because we serve in the European time zone, we can more speedily connect the dots and provide assistance, in addition to covering a wider call time than just our U.S. office alone. Our Barcelona office an integral part of why Avanti has one of the best support networks out there."

What Is Your Most Memorable Avanti Travel Experience: "I have had so many opportunities to travel and connect with our suppliers, ensuring the quality of products that we offer first-hand. The most memorable has to be the Galapagos Islands. The nature, the unique birds and animals, and the way that they are so calm and not afraid of people you can interact and enjoy them in such a unique and peaceful way. There are really incredible small cruises that you can book between islands, or you can also just combine the land-based experience with island-hopping. Instead of cruising, you can stay in some of the lodges and do daily boat excursions to the neighboring Islands. I would recommend a 4-day minimum here combined with some additional time in Quito and the Highlands of Ecuador.

Top Recommendation for Travelers: "Always look for the local. Go along the back alleys. In my home base of Barcelona, people typically gravitate toward the main streets that are full of big chains but if you go 2 blocks around the corner, you'll find local shops and restaurants that have been run by families for 30 years. The food is fresher and the prices better. There are so many hidden treasures and one of my biggest recommendations in the city is making sure to explore more of Catalonia. Go to the scenic areas along the oceanic route of Costa Brava or head a short distance south of Barcelona where you will find Catalonia’s sprawling cava production!"
