title: "Historic Figures: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart"
description: Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, near the small hilltop town of Vinci, in the Tuscan countryside west of Florence. The illegitimate son of a notary and a peasant woman, he grew up in the hamlet of Anchiano surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. The particular quality of Tuscan light — misty, layered, atmospheric — shaped his eye for the rest of his life.

1756 – 1791

*A Traveler's Biography*

# **I. Salzburg and the Making of a Prodigy (1756–1773)**

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on January 27, 1756, in Salzburg, then the seat of an independent prince-archbishopric and today one of Austria's most visited cities. His father, Leopold, was a respected composer and violinist in the archbishop's court orchestra, and it was Leopold who first noticed that his young son could pick out melodies on the harpsichord before he had learned to read. By age five, Wolfgang was composing short pieces; by six, Leopold had begun taking him and his older sister Nannerl, herself a gifted keyboardist, on tour.

Those early tours defined Mozart's childhood more than any classroom ever did. Between 1762 and 1766 the family traveled to Munich, Vienna, Paris, London, and dozens of smaller courts in between, with Wolfgang performing for royalty, sight-reading unfamiliar scores, and improvising on themes given to him on the spot. Audiences were astonished, and more than one observer wondered aloud whether they were watching a genius or a trick. Mozart spent roughly a third of his childhood on the road, absorbing the styles of Italian opera, French dance forms, and German counterpoint in a way that would shape his voice for the rest of his life.

**📍 Getreidegasse 9, Salzburg — Mozart's birthplace, now the Mozart Geburtshaus museum, preserving instruments, letters, and portraits from the family's earliest years**

**✈ Visitor's Tip:** The Geburtshaus sits on Salzburg's most crowded shopping street, so arriving early or booking a combined ticket with the Mozart Wohnhaus across the river helps avoid the midday crush. The building's narrow stairwells and low-ceilinged rooms give a real sense of the modest apartment where a working court musician's family actually lived, a useful contrast to the grander concert halls that bear Mozart's name today.

# **II. Salzburg Court and the Search for Freedom (1773–1781)**

As Mozart grew into adulthood, the freedom of the touring years gave way to something far more constrained. He took a position as a court musician under Prince-Archbishop Hieronymus von Colloredo, a patron who valued punctuality and obedience over artistic ambition. Mozart chafed under the arrangement almost immediately, producing symphonies, serenades, and church music on demand while privately resenting the lack of creative control and the modest pay.

A trip to Paris in 1778, undertaken partly to search for better opportunities, ended in personal tragedy when his mother, who had accompanied him, fell ill and died there. Mozart returned to Salzburg subdued but no less determined to leave. The breaking point came in 1781, when a furious confrontation with Colloredo in Vienna ended with Mozart being dismissed, according to his own account, with a literal kick from the archbishop's steward. He chose to stay in Vienna rather than return home, a decision that would define the rest of his

**📍 Alter Markt and the Residenzplatz, Salzburg — the historic court quarter where Mozart served under Colloredo, steps from the cathedral where he was baptized**

**✈ Visitor's Tip:** The Residenzplatz is one of the few places in Salzburg where the eighteenth-century court city Mozart actually inhabited is still fully legible, without a museum ticket required. An evening walk here, after the tour groups have thinned out, gives a much better sense of the tight, watchful world he was so eager to escape.

# **III. Vienna and Marriage: The Classical Style Matures (1781–1786)**

Vienna in the early 1780s gave Mozart what Salzburg never had: an audience willing to pay for his talent on his own terms. He supported himself through public concerts, private students, and publishing, and for a few years the arrangement worked remarkably well. In 1782 he married Constanze Weber, a match his father strongly opposed, and the couple settled into an apartment life built around composition, performance, and an increasingly demanding social calendar.

This was also Mozart's most productive period as a composer of piano concertos, many of which he wrote for his own subscription concerts, and the years in which his mature symphonic and chamber style truly took shape. He absorbed the influence of Joseph Haydn, whom he came to admire deeply and later dedicated a set of string quartets to, and the two composers occasionally played chamber music together at private gatherings. Vienna's musical culture, competitive and unforgiving, pushed Mozart to refine a style built on clarity, wit, and emotional depth in equal measure.

**📍 Mozarthaus Vienna, Domgasse 5 — the only surviving Vienna apartment where Mozart lived, and the address where he composed The Marriage of Figaro**

**✈ Visitor's Tip:** The Mozarthaus is easy to combine with a walk to nearby St. Stephen's Cathedral, where Mozart was married and where his youngest son was later baptized. Visiting in the late afternoon tends to be quieter than the morning rush from nearby hotels, and the top-floor exhibits on his operas are worth the full climb rather than a quick pass-through.

# **IV. The Final Years: Da Ponte, Freemasonry, and the Requiem (1786–1791)**

Mozart's last five years produced some of the works travelers now associate most closely with his name. His collaboration with librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte yielded The Marriage of Figaro in 1786 and Don Giovanni in 1787, operas that combined comic plotting with a psychological depth rarely attempted on the stage before. In 1788 he joined a Masonic lodge, and the ideals of brotherhood and enlightenment he found there surface openly in works like The Magic Flute, completed in the final months of his life.

Financially, though, Vienna's enthusiasm proved fickle. Commissions slowed in the late 1780s, and Mozart spent his final years juggling debt, travel for paying work, and a punishing composition schedule. In the summer of 1791 an anonymous patron, later revealed to be Count Franz von Walsegg, commissioned a Requiem Mass. Mozart worked on it through failing health that autumn and died on December 5, 1791, at just thirty-five, leaving the Requiem unfinished. He was buried in a common grave outside Vienna, in keeping with the modest burial customs of the time rather than any sign of neglect, though the exact location was lost within years and remains unknown.

**📍 Vienna Central Cemetery and St. Marx Cemetery — Mozart's memorial grave (Central Cemetery) and the historic burial ground where he was actually laid to rest (St. Marx)**

**✈ Visitor's Tip:** Most visitors head straight to the honorary Mozart monument in the Musicians' section of the Central Cemetery, but the quieter St. Marx Cemetery, a short tram ride away, holds the reconstructed grave marker closer to the actual 1791 burial ground and draws a fraction of the crowd. Both are worth the trip for anyone tracing the full arc of his story rather than just its most photographed stop.

# **A Traveler's Epilogue**

To follow Mozart's biography is to trace a path across three cities that shaped classical music itself: the Salzburg apartment where a young composer first put notes to paper as a child, the court quarter where he learned exactly what he did not want his life to look like, and the Vienna streets where he wrote, married, struggled, and died all within the span of a single decade.

Unlike many composers, Mozart left behind not sketches and revisions but a body of finished work so vast it is still being fully cataloged, symphonies, operas, concertos, and chamber music that audiences continue to fill concert halls to hear more than two centuries later. Standing in the modest rooms of the Geburtshaus or beneath the dome of St. Stephen's, it becomes clear how much was compressed into so short a life.

The sites in this biography, taken together, form a portrait of a composer who moved constantly, worked constantly, and somehow still managed to make it all sound effortless, music that Salzburg and Vienna are still, quite literally, performing on his behalf.
