Written by Avanti Destinations | Jun 06, 2024

While summer is the most popular time to embark on a vacation, there are so many awe-inspiring year-round experiences beyond the sunny months that we think will spark your wanderlust! Ascend the top of snow-covered cliffs, witness lights dance across the arctic sky, or meet talented crafters while traversing glimmering holiday markets. We are kicking off a new season of Go365, our annual showcase of exciting experiences around the world that reach past the summertime. Previously we highlighted the most euphoric wellness getaways   now check out our favorite seasonal gems that will give you the travel bug! Join the journey by soaking up these 7 incredible adventures, idyllic during the unique beauty of the wintertime.

1. Aurora Colosseum (Sweden) Did you miss the Aurora Borealis when it made an appearance in North America this spring? No worries, you can always catch it – in its full glory! – during Finland’s winter season. Though there are many options for witnessing this marvel, one of our favorites is at the Ice Colosseum. Glide gracefully across flurrying frozen expanses in a snowmobile-led sled ride to an optimal vantage point, and cozy up on reindeer furs to watch the dancing colors. Afterward, retreat to a nearby camp and warm up with a hearty meal.

2. Top of Europe (Switzerland) What’s more marvelous than a mountain getaway in winter? Switzerland’s Jungfraujoch has the highest railway station in all of Europe (located at 11,332 feet above sea level!) providing the ultimate mountaintop escape. Unveil spectacular scenery and discover the story of this historic area while ascending the impressive peaks via train, cable car, and foot. Take a break at the top to dine at the restaurant or shop for chocolate while looking out over the powdery valleys below.

3. Arctic Biking (Finland) Bike rides are not just for sunny days! Cycling across the arctic is an unforgettable adventure, combining crisp winter air with the thrill of movement. Marvel at the unbeatable snowy scenery of Finland while seated on an electric fat-tired bicycle, cruising alongside icy rivers and snow-topped forests. Stop for hot chocolate atop Ounasvaara hill to fully take in the views!

4. Snow Monkey Park (Japan) A name that translates to ‘Hell’s Valley’ due to the boiling water that bubbles up through crevices in the frozen ground, the hot springs of Jigokudani attract large groups of Japanese snow monkeys who come to bathe in its waters. Because they are at ease and accustomed to humans, it's harmless to get an up-close view of these fluffy creatures as they flock here to luxuriate in the steamy pools. Embark on a breezy 1.5-mile hike to watch these primate families enjoy their seasonal soak.

5. Historic Christmas Market (Czech Republic) One of the most delightful things about wintertime is the holiday season, and many famed European cities celebrate it in style with their slew of markets! Prague in particular – already known for its timeless architecture and rich history – is home to one of the most charming Christmas markets of the continent. Dating back to the 15th century, the Old Town Square turns into an enchanting location for buying gifts and holiday treats.

6. Winter Lights (England) Dazzling displays and shimmering lights – London is one of the most magical cities in the wintertime, especially around the holiday season when it’s decked out with Christmas décor. Get in the spirit and wander through Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, and Regent Street as they light up with seasonal decorations, and sip on mulled wine or hot chocolate while shopping for the perfect gift. Stop to listen to music or lace up a pair of skates to go for a few loops around the ice rink!

7. Desert Garden (Morocco) Winter is a perfect time to enjoy the cooler weather of the desert, and Morocco is a wonderous escape. While the distant mountains become sprinkled with snow, the sprawling valleys remain moderate and pleasant to explore. Delve into the stunning scenery of Ourika Valley and absorb the therapeutic qualities of its expansive gardens that grow flora used for spices, aromatics, cosmetics, health treatments, and science. Eat an organic lunch prepared with these perfect plants!
