Treasures of Central & South America: A UNESCO Journey

International travel carries diverse meanings for each of us. To me, it's an odyssey of discovery, a voyage sparked by curiosity to experience the world's marvels. It's about breaking free from routines and exploring natural wonders, rich history, and distinct cultures up close and personal.

Central & South America is full of UNESCO World Heritage sites that promise adventure, history, stunning landscapes, and cultural richness. These diverse sites offer a melting pot of experiences for anyone seeking to break away from the ordinary and embark on a journey of discovery.  Avanti offers travelers a vast selection of UNESCO sites to visit - let's delve into some of my personal favorites!

Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu (Peru) Hidden among the misty morning peaks of the Andes lies the ancient Inka citadel of Machu Picchu. The landscape offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains but the deeper discovery is in the ingenuity of the intricate stone terraces, temples, and residential areas. The warm local guides are famous for their passion and knowledge of the agricultural and engineering systems that built this enigmatic site.  Exploring the vast archaeological complex of Machu Picchu transports you to the Inka empire of centuries prior, and visiting this site is a pilgrimage for history enthusiasts.

City of Cartagena (Colombia) The city of Cartagena exudes vibrant energy. Its well-preserved old town is a labyrinth of narrow streets lined with colorful buildings, Arepa and Patacón food carts, and music-filled plazas. The fortified walls of old town are the perfect Spanish colonial backdrop as you wander along cobblestone streets. This Caribbean coastal town embodies a captivating fusion of Afro-Colombian cuisine, dance, music, spirituality and language, creating an ideal blend for travelers to celebrate.

Easter Island (Chile) Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, is a remote paradise in the vastness of the Pacific Ocean. Admittedly a long trip (7-hour flight from Santiago), the sacrifice is worth its weight in stone. As you stand before the mysterious moai statues, you can't help but ponder the meaning of these colossal stone figures. The island's isolated natural beauty, with its rugged coastline and volcanic landscapes, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to delve into its history and uncover the stories behind the moai.

Galapagos Islands (Ecuador)
The Galapagos Islands are a haven for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. This remote archipelago, where Charles Darwin developed his theory of evolution, is a treasure for natural history lovers and adventure enthusiasts. Its unique ecosystem is home to species found nowhere else on Earth, from giant tortoises to blue-footed boobies. High on my list of memorable travel experiences was snorkeling with sea lions in the Galapagos. Very few experiences in life compare to connecting with the natural world in a wild environment!

Tikal (Guatemala) Deep within the lush jungles of northern Guatemala, Tikal rises like a lost city from an ancient civilization. Once the heart of the Mayan Empire, Tikal's towering pyramids, temples, and palaces evoke a sense of awe and wonder. Climbing to the top of Temple IV offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding rainforest canopy, and with the help of your guide, you can picture the bustling city of the past as you explore this archaeological treasure.

Salvador da Bahia (Brazil) Salvador da Bahia, located on the northeastern coast of Brazil, is a city steeped in African-Brazilian culture and history.  Pelourinho, the historic center is made up of pastel-colored colonial buildings and lively cobblestone-streets filled with artists. Around every corner, you'll run into a circle of locals performing Capoeira and Baianas selling tropical fruits and Acarajé - a traditional dish of fritters made with black eyed peas and filled with shrimp, vatapá, salad and super spicy hot sauce - if you dare.  The fusion of African, Portuguese, and indigenous influences emanates in all aspects of the city's cuisine, music, and religious traditions. Exploring Salvador da Bahia is like immersing yourself in a vibrant tapestry of cultures.

Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System (Belize) The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System is a mecca for marine enthusiasts. As you snorkel or dive through this underwater wonderland, you're surrounded by vibrant coral gardens teeming with manatees, stingrays, nurse sharks, sea turtles and colorful fish. Don't worry, nurse sharks are harmless to humans. The Belize Barrier Reef is not just a reef; it's a portal to a world beneath the waves.

It started at a young age... the itch to explore. That curiosity to discover a world beyond borders has expanded my worldview, shown me natural wonders and nourished my passion to travel.
