Picking the Best Season to Visit the South Pacific

With a wide array of seasonal activities and varying climates, all with their own benefits, there's not a truly right or wrong time to explore the South Pacific. Though the arid Outback may be too hot to handle in the peak of summer, Australia's breezy beaches are enjoyable all year round. And while some may prefer to visit Fiji during the dry season, others may opt for the milder weather of its wet season to avoid the bustle of tourists and benefit from better prices. Either way, knowing what to expect from each season is crucial for getting what you want out of your getaway!

When in Doubt, Go Subtropical!
Brisbane, Australia

In general, well-seasoned globetrotters are aware that the most idyllic Australian weather occurs during their winter months (typically American summer months, June through September). Otherwise, the heat of the Outback can be a bit intense. However, certain subtropical areas like Brisbane generally have pleasant weather all year long. Flanked by the surfing hotspots of Gold and Sunshine Coasts, this vibrant capital of Queensland offers a great mix of urban and outdoorsy opportunities. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll along Brisbane River’s scenic South Bank, delve into history at the Queensland Museum, take an Aboriginal walking tour of the city, or try out several adventure options like hiking at the cliffs of Kangaroo Point.

Keep Steady in Temperate Climate
Rotorua, New Zealand

New Zealand has a wide range of climates – with warm subtropical areas in the far north and snowy alpine regions in the South Island. The general consensus is to visit New Zealand during its summer months, falling between December and February, when temperatures are at their warmest. However, areas like Rotorua provide reasons to visit all year. While this region does experience four distinct seasons – and winter can be quite a bit cooler – its temperate climate protects it from wild extremes, and its geothermal activity provides natural heat, offering a unique seasonal experience. The area of Rotorua Lake is renowned for its natural hot springs, erupting geysers, and bubbling mud pools. Additionally, it is home to thriving indigenous villages with a traditional crafts and trades school, where visitors can encounter local wood carvings and hand-made weavings created by locals.

Rain or Shine, Find Tropical Bliss
Mamanuca, Fiji

With a warm, tropical climate and two distinct wet and dry seasons, Fiji can be a great place any time of year depending what you are looking for. Many may prefer the drier months between May and October when there is consistent sunshine, low humidity, and minimal rainfall – however, the rainy season can still be a great time to visit, especially if you're not bothered by occasional showers and prefer a more peaceful atmosphere with fewer crowds. Composed of over 20 picturesque islands, Mamanuca is a volcanic archipelago that boasts palm-fringed white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, colorful and fascinating marine life, and exciting water activities. These islands are a good option any time of year, even in the wet season – though you can expect more rain and higher humidity, the water remains warm, and the islands still offer beautiful scenery with less tourist activity.
